What you should know about Captains Lodge

Holiday Apartments in Tauranga, Lodge in Tauranga

Local people started pressuring him to take them out on fishing trips, and it soon became apparent that a purpose built charter boat would be ideal for fishing trips and to also take over the barging work which was very necessary on the harbour in those days. She was launched in 1938 and has been working on the harbour and taking people out fishing and to Mayor Island ever since. We purchased her in 1988, when she was in a very run down state and worked on bringing her up to an excellent standard again. She then worked very successfully out of Whakatane for five years until we moved our whole operation to Tauranga.
she was home again!. Te Kuia is one of the most popular charter fishing vessels in Tauranga, comfortable and well built of solid kauri, with extensive seating areas, a huge back cabin, a convenient galley and a large BBQ. She caters for individuals on public day reef fishing trips and charter groups of up to 35 people. She is also set up to do overnight trips for up to 11 people with full sized comfortable bunks, specialising in overnight reef fishing around Motiti and overnight hapuka fishing around Mayor Island. The Te Kuia is available for school groups, clubs, families and other large groups of up to 65 for drop offs to Mayor and Slipper Islands.
Ratahi was built in 1938 by Jerry Williams, specifically for running line fishing trips out of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui and has been doing these trips regularly ever since. Recently upgraded, she now has more home comforts, a roomy wheelhouse and yet the same old fashioned charm she has always been known for. Ratahi is ideally suited for groups of up to 25 people for fishing or diving trips. They are very experienced boat handlers, keen fishermen, and love being out on the water. Whether it is the fishing hot spots you are targeting, a cruise around the harbour or the offshore islands, spectacular diving or just relaxing with friends on the water, these guys with their wealth of knowledge will ensure you have the best day possible.
She knows a lot about all aspects of fishing and is ready and willing to help you plan a trip to remember. Skipper Hugh Ensor grew up with an intense love of the sea, spending his boyhood years on the East Coast near Gisborne learning a love of fishing and hunting and the Great Outdoors . After finishing school he did an apprenticeship as an Engineer which has stood him in good stead when it comes to maintaining the three vessels. After that some years were spent hunting deer and goats for the Government in various locations around New Zealand. These skills have now been honed and are put into practice on the sea hunting fish.
Hugh's childhood love of the sea led to him following a career as a commercial diver, at which he proved to be very adept. He spent six years working in various countries in the offshore oilfield industry. Second to none, he has an awesome reputation for putting fish on the boat, specializing in reef and hapuka fishing anywhere in the Bay of Plenty. This guy has a real passion for fishing and diving and knows the industry really well.
As the owners of the three vessels, we take pride in our little fleet and look forward to having you on board for a trip to remember

It is a silvery white fish with a prominent dark saddle mark behind the head. The mouth is small, somewhat turned down, and the pectoral fin has one long ray extending back beyond the vent. It is hoped that new fisheries management measures will restore stocks of this fast breeding fish. This is a species of northern waters which prefers rocky shores about headlands and offshore islands. They are strong for their size and are a reasonable table fish, however they are seldom targetted by anglers who are mostly interested in larger species. These distinctive fish are common in northern waters and may be found in estuaries and harbours, from the shoreline down to depths of about 150m. Normally this species moves in shoals of similar sized individuals, harrying small fishes such as sardines and pilchards, although any small fishes, crabs, shrimps and squids are taken when available. A popular table fish, bass is not commercially distinguished from hapuku, and is recreationally caught by deepwater bottom fishing with large strip baits on 24kg or 37kg tackle. Hapuku fishing is regarded as more of a food harvesting exercise than sportfishing. They move into these areas in mid summer and are available to rod and reel fishermen through the winter. Gemfish, a slender long lived fish, is found throughout New Zealand coastal waters but is more common at depths of m, and often caught when hapuka fishing. Most common catches for the few fly fishermen around our coast are kahawai, snapper, trevally, and barracouta. We operate from the Tauranga Bridge Marina which is on the Mount Maunganui side of the Tauranga Harbour Bridge
